Clinical News/Updates
Improved Referral Routes into Young Somerset: To have the best chance of making a difference, Low Intensity Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (LI-CBT) requires a commitment on the part of the parent/carer or child/young person and regular attendance at sessions. The parent or carer can make a referral at Parent/Carer Referral Form. The young person can make a referral with their parents’ consent at Young Person Referral Form. If 13 or over and Gillick competent Young Person Referral Form and to get support to complete the form a young person can contact a wellbeing navigator at WN@youngsomerset.org.uk.
If you believe that none of these routes is suitable and having read the professional guidance to ensure that our service is suitable then please send a referral letter with full details and reasons why the referral routes above are not suitable to wellbeing@youngsomerset.org.uk. A referral form is no longer required.
Next Connecting the Dots Meeting: As some of you know, this is a meeting that aims to improve how we work between primary care and Somerset Foundation Trust. It is informal and you can come and listen in, bring an item you would like to raise, or just give a ‘view from general practice’. We are alternating the days between Tuesdays and Wednesdays and the next meeting is Tuesday 30th January 1-2pm. Click here to join the meeting. Look forward to seeing you there.

Information for GP Partners/Salaried/Locums/Practice Managers
2024 NHS England Advanced Practice Funding Application – EOI: Expressions of interest for 2024 applications for NHSE funding for trainee Advanced Practitioners (NHSE Approved MSc Advanced Practice courses) are invited. Employers can apply for up to 3 years funding (£8600 annually) to supervise and support trainees through the process. In addition, for those applying for apprenticeships, practices can apply for the Government Apprenticeship Levy to cover course fees. Further information can be found on the South West Regional Faculty for Advanced Practice website. Trainees undertaking an approved MSc Advanced Practice course will need to meet the admission criteria for their chosen University and have employer support and an Advanced Practice role in place once qualified. For general practices in Somerset the applications are co-ordinated by Catherine Hayden, Somerset Training Hub Advanced Practice Lead. Managers/Supervisors of prospective trainees please contact catherine.hayden@nhs.net to express interest or with any questions. Continuing trainees previously in receipt of funding will be contacted to review their applications in due course.
Medical Student Year 5, 8 Week Placement: Dr Farah Nauyan a GP in Crewkerne’s son is studying medicine at Kings' College London and is in year 4, and has asked the LMC if there are any practices that would be willing to take him from 19th August till 11th October 2024, by which time he will be in year 5. If this is of interest please do contact Dr Nauyan direct farah.nauyan@nhs.net.
Open Consultation - Role of Incentive Schemes in General Practice: There is a public consultation to share views and insights on the role of the incentive scheme in general practice. Sharing your views is really important as QOF and IIF are key parts of general practice.
To implement change we must continue to have our voice heard – click here for the link! The consultation ends on the 7th March 2024.
Training/Events
Care Navigation Training Dates are Now Available Until March 2024: The delivery plan for recovering access to primary care commits to training up to 6,500 staff (one person from every practice and PCN in the country) in care navigation skills. Thousands of primary care colleagues have taken up this free national offer, equipping learners to effectively communicate with patients and the multi-disciplinary team. More details on the training can be found here .
Training is accredited with foundation and advanced modules available. A new online collaborative platform has launched for learners and their managers to access resources and to connect with their peers.
The care navigation offer only runs until 31 March 2024 so it is recommended to get any required courses booked as soon as possible. See here for the dates that are available.
We would like to encourage you to:
• take up all places you would like (exceeding 1 place per practice and 1 per PCN is acceptable)
• get desired places booked. All course dates have now been scheduled until end of March 24 (see attached).
• attend booked courses and avoid cancellations wherever possible
• Book module 1 and rebook module 2 for courses that were cancelled for not booking module 1.
Safe Working - Online Discussion Group with GPC Representative Dr Paul Hynam: Following recent updates to the BMA’s Safe Working Guidance, we will be running the final online update session to explore the practical implications of delivering a safe service. This one hour session will be fully interactive and will provide a safe space to discuss the pros and cons of the various measures being proposed. It will not be recorded. There will be a maximum of 20 participants at the session and is for Somerset GPs and practice managers only.
Date: Wednesday 14th March 13.00-14.00 (book online).
Top Tips
Ardens CQC Searches: The LMC wanted to make practices aware of a suite of searches that the CQC use when they are planning to review a practice. These can be located within the Ardens searches on EMIS. They are called “CQC Inspection Searches”. They include Safety Alerts, DMARDS, Medication Review, Medicines Monitoring, Missed Diagnosis. This will help practices to review their current position clinically and areas to work on and these can used as part of the audit process within practice. Read our top tips here.
Frailty Core Contract: The LMC have been made aware from the ICB that the prevalence of Frailty is low in Somerset. Nationally the prevalence is a 8% and in some practices in Somerset it is 1%. Frailty has been part of the GP Core Contract since 2017, the requirements have changed and the LMC have put together a helpful document for practices to use to ensure the correct SNOMED codes and requirements are met.
