Somerset LMC Weekly Update Friday 14th January 2022

Date sent: Friday 14 January 2022

Sent to all Somerset GPs and Practice Managers          This and previous updates are available here

Recording Abuse of Primary Care: Colleagues may be interested in adding this code in any instance of work that they find themselves doing on behalf of another team for no very good reason. It will make subsequent searches on inappropriate transfer of work easier. Inappropriate use of general practitioner service (finding) SCTID: 968521000000109

Home Safety Visits & Partnership With Devon & Somerset Fire & Rescue: DSFR has a scheme where the most vulnerable can be visited by a technician to assess their home and provide advice and install free equipment if any is deemed necessary. One example might be fitting smoke detectors with strobe lights for the deaf who remove their hearing aids at night. The referral process is simple and people can refer themselves. See here for more and contact details.

COVID-19 Flow of Self-Reported Lateral Flow Device Test Results to GP Records: From Tuesday 11 January 2022, confirmatory PCR test results are no longer required following a positive lateral flow test result. Previously only "Assisted" Positive Lateral Flow Device test results have been passed through to GP systems. From Wednesday 12 January, all Pillar 2, Positive Lateral Flow Device test results will be flowed through to GP systems. In Emis Web, these will present in the Lab Report Workflow as the following:

As is the current case for all COVID-19 test results, GPs are not required to take any action on receipt of these results.
All Lateral Flow Device test results should be regarded as self-reported. A further technical update will be provided at a later date to differentiate between an "Assisted" lateral flow device result (usually taken at a test centre with results reported by an operative), and those "Self-Report" by the subject/individual.  For further guidance please refer to COVID-19 and Information Standards SNAP Update, 11 January 2022, Issue 19.

This was imposed by DHSC without notice on the BMA. Colleagues should note that, as in the EMIS note to practices stated, you are under no obligation to take any action on any result.

Are You A New Partner or Looking to Become One? We are aware that there are GPs who have recently taken up new partnerships in Somerset practices or may be looking to do so, we are keen to offer support where needed and would be grateful if you could complete this short survey to establish any support that may be needed. Closing date Noon Friday 4th February.

No Jab, No Job – Vaccine Requirements for Somerset Practice Staff Q&A Session: An online seminar has now been arranged with Adrian Poole concerning this matter. Adrian’s team at Porter Dodson are completing guidance notes and template documents which will be available from the LMC website from early next week.  Adrian has asked us to reiterate that the situation is not straightforward and that extreme care needs to be taken in discussions with affected staff. Those discussions also need to take place in good time for 3rd February, being the last day on which first vaccinations can be received to meet the 1st April deadline to be fully vaccinated. Failing to deal with these discussions properly are likely to result in claims of discrimination and/or unfair dismissal. The advice is therefore that consultation sessions should occur immediately, if not already undertaken.’  The online seminar will be held on Thursday 27th January at 11.00am, book your place here.

Student Nurses & Training Nursing Associate Placements in Practice or PCNs: There is a one off placement incentive payment available for GP practices or PCNs who commit and sign up to offering Student Nurses and Trainee Nursing Associate (TNA) placements in 2022. Please complete the survey here if you will support student nurse and TNA placements going forward.

Paediatric Pulse Oximeters (from the CCG): Following the successful distribution of paediatric oximeters to all practices in Somerset we were provided with additional paediatric pulse oximeters by NHSE. We have distributed extra meters to practices who requested them following the first round and to all branch surgeries and have been left with 20 meters. Before we distribute these to other organisations we thought we would approach practices to see if you have any suggestions as to how we could most effectively use them, please do email linda.carson3@nhs.net.

NHS Diabetes Prevention Programme – Practice Referral Toolkit: The NHS Diabetes Prevention Programme (NHS DPP) has been running successfully in Somerset for several years. This programme, which is delivered by Xyla Health and Wellbeing, is available to all patients in Somerset identified as pre-diabetic and can support them to reduce their risk of developing Type 2 diabetes. During 2021 we have seen a significant drop in the number of referrals to the NHS DPP. As such, we are asking practices to undertake an EMIS search to identify patients who met the eligibility criteria in 2021 and either refer them directly to the programme or send them an invitation letter/text encouraging them to self-refer.  To support practices, a comprehensive toolkit and Quick Start Guide (see attached) has been developed and can be found via the following public TeamNet link NHS Diabetes Prevention Programme - TeamNet Link . This toolkit contains information on the NHS DPP, EMIS searches, coding, referral information, patient pathways and other useful resources.  For any further support please do not hesitate to contact the Diabetes Prevention Lead Officer, Georgie Clayton (Somerset CCG) on 07788 337374 or by emailing  Georgina.clayton@nhs.net.  For any support with TeamNet please contact James Loder (Somerset Primary Healthcare)  james.loder@nhs.net.

Book Club: Over the last 18 months the South West Workforce Transformation Team has been developing the Scenario Planning Tool; designed to support conversations around what health and social care might look like in 10 to 15 years. Creating time to consider the future is challenging, especially given the current pressures on systems. With this in mind, HEE have designed a series of one hour informal ‘book club’ sessions with the ambition of socialising the project to system colleagues in a way that they feel is sympathetic to work pressures. Please see the attached Book Club flyer for details and feel free to drop into one or all the sessions if you are able. All staff are welcome. to book a place, please contact ellie.bevis@thestaffcollege.uk

Long Covid - GP Questionnaire: The South West CVD, Respiratory and Diabetes Clinical Network would be grateful if you could complete this online questionnaire to hear about your experiences with patients with long Covid. Their aim is to hold a listening event to explore the results later this year.

Compassionate Conversations Training - event dates now live:  Supporting NHS colleagues to handle difficult situations with compassion, an opportunity for colleagues across the South West to take part in a pilot training programme from 17th January, details can be found here.

And finally...
Retreats for Health Professionals: How would you like a weekend retreat in SW Wilts at the end of March to recharge, revitalise and reset? Two retired doctors have created a not-for-profit centre to help the profession - next Retreat is Fri 25th-Sun 27th March, please see https://ratfordretreatcentre.co.uk/retreats for details.

Kind regards

Jill
