• Introducing the Martyn Hughes Prize Awards for Innovation in Education. Have you got an idea for an education session?  As you are all aware, Martyn Hughes recently retired. Martyn was one of the founding members of Somerset General Practice Education Trust (SGPET)and a pioneer of primary care education. Martyn was passionate about education and the evolution of education to encompass the rich diversity of professionals working together in Somerset. Martyn and the LMC are awarding three prizes of £250 to support the development of an education idea to be delivered in Somerset.

  If you work in Somerset and have an idea that you think would make a good education session such as informing your colleagues about your role and how you can support them or an example of good practice that would be of benefit to all to know then please submit your ideas to lmc.sgpet@nhs.net by 1 November 2022.

• Calling all those training to prescribe, (but this is also relevant to all prescribers). How can we ensure that we provide high standard of care when prescribing for those people with autism or learning disabilities? This excellent 15-minute collaborative video from University of West of England/Brandon Trust provides pointers on how to improve care. Additionally, if you are currently in learning, UWE suggest after watching the video you choose 2 competences from the RPS Framework and provide reflections in your practice log entry (minimum 100 words) of how you could implement/improve this in your own practice.

• Insomnia makes pain worse. Pain makes insomnia worse. Interrupting this cycle is important. On page 5 of this link there is a lived experience story of someone in Somerset who has seen a significant improvement in their sleep, despite living with pain, following referral to Sleepstation. You may want to take a look at the story and share it with people living with insomnia and pain. Additionally, if you or your team members would like to know more of how to manage sleep better Sleepstation offer free interactive webinars which can be requested via training@sleepstation.org.uk

• South West General Practice Network - Please see flyer here to the inaugural South West General Practice Clinical Safety Network. It’s been circulated to GPs, but as we know, nursing is a safety critical role, so it would be good to get GPNs involved with this. Feel free to share this with any colleagues or GPNs you know who would find it useful.
