News from the GPC:
Accelerating citizen access to records NHS England will be enabling clinical record access to patients via the NHS App on 1st November. We are expecting a toolkit to be circulated to practices ahead of this and have remained in discussions to ensure rollout is neither burdensome nor disruptive to practices. NHSE will be in touch with practices directly to explain the changes taking place and how GPs can support rollout.
Understanding more about the experience of International Medical Graduate GPs NHSE/I is working with Ipsos UK to explore the experience of GP IMGs who are in training or have completed training in England, to provide insight into the support needed for IMGs through their training and employment journey. The BMA supports this research by reaching out to our networks.
If you know an IMG who did GP training in England but is not working in general practice please encourage them to talk to Ipsos UK, who are keen to understand their experiences. They want to speak to doctors who trained, but are not working as GPs, for example, working in a hospital or elsewhere in England, or those working outside of England.
Prospective/Future Access to Online Records - Managing Data Quality EMIS have pulled together some useful tips:
Consultations
- Configure a selection of Quick codes and Text
- When completing a consultation, if there are any actions for the patient, make sure they are listed clearly. This also applies when completing management plans. Ensure the consultation details who is responsible for which actions.
- Use Online Visibility for any consultations that the patient does not want to be shown online, especially if someone else has access to their account e.g. a proxy user.
- Online Visibility and second consultations may also need to be used if you are adding something you do not want the patient to view until you have spoken to them.
Care Record
- When filing documents and attachments, ensure they are named clearly. For example, “Clinical Document” isn’t clear but “Discharge Letter” provides more context.
- Review what should and shouldn’t be recorded as a Problem and whether the significance and duration are correct.
- Regularly review the Problem page to ensure problems are accurate, ended where necessary and the patient is aware of each one.
- Use Online Visibility for any individual items that the patient does not want to be shown online, especially if someone else has access to their account e.g. a proxy user.
Third Parties
- Ensure diagnoses or actions have been discussed with the patient prior to documenting them on EMIS Web from letters and third parties.
- If copying emails / correspondence from third parties (eg. Hospital teams) ensure you remove any direct contact information unless appropriate.
Lab Reports
- Review your pre-set lab report comments to make sure they are clear and easy to understand by a patient.

Somerset LMC/STH Workforce Webinar Thursday 6th October 13.00-14.00 – What is an FCP, how is it different to an ACP – what are the routes to become an FCP: Do you have staff working within your practice who are employed in first contact roles (i.e. seeing people without direct supervision and making diagnoses/independent management plans for patients)? If so, this webinar will help to demystify some of the nuances in terminology around these roles, what the requirements are for the Roadmaps to practice (MSK, Paramedic & OT) along with the supervision requirements. There will also be a brief discussion around the difference between an FCP and an ACP. Book your place here.
Kind regards
