Medical Directors, Somerset LMC: We are pleased to announce the appointment of Dr Justin Geddes to the position of Medical Director from 3rd October 2022. He will work alongside Dr Catherine Ievers our former deputy, the LMC Executive and team. Many of you will know Justin in his role as Chief Executive Officer for the Devon Doctors group. We are excited to work alongside Justin, who has a wealth of experience and will be a huge asset to our LMC and practices.
Impact of Inflation on Practice Income: The announcement that the devolved administrations are offering an 4.5% to their practices brings the position in England into stark relief with no sign of any change to the 5 year 2% contract position.
Most of us are not very familiar with the potential impact of rising inflation on practice costs, and consequently GP take home pay. We strongly urge everyone to read this excellent summary from Dr Peter Holden ( BMA GP Committee member) of how the system for GP payments has evolved and why it puts partners in particular at risk from high inflation. He has also produced a useful calculator to illustrate the possible effects of inflation on partners take home pay. You may want a stiff drink before you enter your own figures. We are compiling a short survey on the impact which we hope to share in next week’s update.
Somerset GP Practice statistics for June 2022: Practices may wish to share this infographic of statistics taken form NHS Digital on their social media channels, well done it’s no wonder you are all tired!
Child Health Information Services (CHIS): have recently sent out the quarterly Out of Circulation lists for practices to validate, they have asked that these lists are returned as soon as possible, as this will reduce the numbers included on the next quarterly report. Please contact hil.bnsssg.swchis@nhs.net if you have any questions.
New Child Protection Medical Pathway: An additional step has been added to this pathway. Following feedback from some of the GP Safe Guarding leads, a step has been added to speak to a senior paediatrician for advice before making a referral if you are unsure if it is safeguarding or if there may be an alternative medical explanation. Please do let the safeguarding team know if you have any feedback about this change.
GP in Somerset Blogs: The media team are finding that the blogs on the website which are fed through social media channels are getting very good engagement and driving traffic to the Job vacancies in the county, the two most recent blogs are specialist GP in Health In equalities and pools to keep you cool in somerset (a fun summer blog pointing out pools close to GP surgeries) if you work in General practice and have an special interest or hobby and would like to submit a blog please do e mail me jill.hellens@nhs.net
An introduction to outdoor coaching (Wednesday 21st September 13.30-16.30, Quaker House, Bath Place, Taunton): Join Andrew Fisk (Senior L&D Consultant )to explore the benefits and opportunities coaching in the outdoors can bring. This face to face session will cover practical considerations, contracting, and assessing potential ‘risks’ of using the outdoors.
Following the session, you will be encouraged to have a go at coaching in the outdoors, and then join a reflective session on the Tuesday 4th October via Teams meeting, to discuss what you learned. to attend please e mail AFisk@somerset.gov.uk
