Date sent: Friday 17 June 2022

Sent to all Somerset GPs and Practice Managers          This and previous updates are available here

LMC Medical Director Role: We are seeking an additional part-time Medical Director/LMC Medical Secretary as soon as possible to join our team based in Taunton. Ideally for 20 hours over an average of two to three days a week but this could be adjusted for the right candidate. The days worked may vary in accordance with meeting schedules and other commitments. A flexible approach to the working week will therefore be necessary.

This is an interesting and challenging role: you will need to be a registered Medical Practitioner with at least 10 years’ experience in General Practice and to have a working knowledge of the regulatory landscape of primary care including the GMS contract and Statement of Financial Entitlements. It would be helpful to have some familiarity with NHS management structures.

The role is wide ranging and includes guiding the LMC in regulatory, legal, complaints and other contractual matters and representing the Committee and wider general practice to NHS and other organisations. The Medical Director also acts as a source of advice on a wide range of issues to GPs seeking personal and professional help, including pastoral matters.

We offer a competitive salary plus 14% top up giving you freedom to choose your own pension arrangements.

You can download the Person Specification and Job Description from our website . If you would like to know more please contact Mrs Jill Hellens at jill.hellens@nhs.net . Closing date Friday 24th June and interviews 6th July.

Re-Instatement of the Shared Care Protocol 2018 for Prescribing Dementia Drugs: In recent months this protocol had been taken into retirement, but it has been reinstated this month. It will be reviewed with our specialist trust colleagues and medicine management team in the coming months and we will keep you updated on these developments.

The Mental Health Team have confirmed that patients who self refer to a range of Mental Health Services within Somerset will be signposted to the correct one rather than back to the GP. This includes Somerset Crisis Safe Space | Second Step (second-step.co.uk) and Somerset Open Mental Health (rethink.org).

Reducing Barriers to Cancer Presentations’ Campaign: NHSEI have launched a second stage of this following on from the original launch in March 2022. Campaign assets can now be downloaded from the Campaign Resource Centre.  The campaign will target those over 50 and from C2DE socio-economic groups, as these people are most at risk of cancer, and will include specific activity to reach Black and South Asian audiences who are already at risk of health inequalities. This phase of activity will run from 6 June to 17 July across TV, video-on-demand, PR, partnerships, search and social media as well as multicultural communications and accessibility communications.

BP@Home to Case Find Hypertension: As part of this NHSE initiative, Somerset County Council are offering 2500 BP machines to practices and PCNs for BP monitoring. If you would like to register your practice or PCN please complete this survey by 1/8/22.

SEW Podcast – Episode 75 – The Divided Brain In the latest episode of the Somerset Emotional Wellbeing podcast, The Divided Brain, our hosts Dr Peter Bagshaw and Dr Andrew Tresidder discuss how Iain McGilchrist’s book “The Master and His Emissary” raises interesting points about the physiology of the brain, why understanding how the brain works is important in understanding our view of the world and how it can affect how we make decisions and live our lives.

Primary Care Apprenticeship Webinar: HEE are hosting a webinar for all GP practices on the 23rd June 13:00-13:40. This is an opportunity for all practices to understand how to access the apprenticeship levy in a primary care setting and highlight the benefits for training an Advanced Practitioner on this route – both financial and for development of their trainees. They are hoping to have talks from their apprenticeships lead, James Orpin-Wright, as well as a GP practice that has gone through the apprenticeship sign-on process and round off with an opportunity to ask any questions. The webinar will be a drop-in session, so no need to sign up the link to join is here. You can submit any questions before and during the webinar through this slido link and they will aim to answer them during the Q&A session at the end.
