Onward Referrals from SFT: For some time the hospital contract has stipulated that if patients need onward referral within the trust either related to the original problem or for an urgent problem (e.g. suspected cancer) then this should be done without involvement of the GP. In order to identify areas in which this may not be happening, SFT have set up an email address onwardreferrals@somersetft.nhs.uk. We encourage practices to email such cases identifiable with an NHS number where an onward referral is being requested by primary care. They will sort out the referral so you do not need to do this.
Physician Associate Degree Apprenticeships: To help grow and transform the PA workforce, NHS England are offering a limited number of training support grants to employers (including NHS trusts and primary care organisations) of £10,000 per apprentice starting in 2023/24 on a Physician Associate Degree Apprenticeship (level 7) programme. Full details are available here. Employers should submit their expressions of interest via this national online survey. The survey will close at 6pm on 14th July 2023.
What Does Good Look Like? Taking Back Control in General Practice LMC Study Day 12th September 2023, Taunton Racecourse: This will be a whole day event of presentations and break out groups, and is a joint workforce event organised by Somerset LMC/Somerset Education Trust and Training Hub. We have managed to secure backfill funding from the ICB for GPs to attend this event. We encourage one GP and the Practice Manager to attend. Draft programme is available here. Places are limited so please book early.
Improving Radiology Report Communication Short Survey: Alice Bevan a sonographer at SFT has developed a short survey to help shape the new solution for critical results notifications, the QR code to access the survey here. For more information please see this poster.
Bariatric Surgery Survey: The LMC are receiving increasing queries and would be grateful if practices could complete this short survey to indicate the number of requests received and how they have been managed to date in order to have conversations with the ICB on how these patients are managed in the future. The survey closes at midday on Friday 14th July.
Somerset New to Practice General Practice Fellowship Programme for Newly Qualified GPs: Are you or do you know a GP that has qualified since April 2022 and is/will be working in Somerset? If so this funded fellowship programme may be of interest. It is a 2 year programme designed to provide personalised support to newly qualified GPs to help gain confidence and to develop enjoyable, fulfilling and sustainable careers in general practice. NHSEI is aiming for a 100% uptake and nearly all of our Somerset GPs have joined. We started in April 21 and have had up to 56 fellows, so you may already have one of our fellows working in your practice! We have had great feedback, and one of the highlights is the benefit of the mentoring, appreciation of paid time (£10,000 pro rata per annum) to undertake chosen CPD or interests and the online monthly Thursday lunchtime 30 minute session with various speakers. Example topics include: knowing about appraisals; PCN overview; lifestyle medicine; managing difficult blood results on a Friday afternoon and time management. This programme continues to evolve according to the needs and aspirations of our fellows. Our next cohort will start in October 23 and the closing date is 7th September 2023. See programme, application form and needs analysis for more information. If you would like to find out more or apply, please contact Dr Catherine Ievers catherine.ievers1@nhs.net.
Kind regards
