General Practice Fellowships for Newly Qualified GPs and Nurses

Updated on Tuesday, 3 October 2023, 3087 views

This is a two year programme of support available to all newly qualified GPs and nurses working in general practice. This fellowship is part of NHS Long Term Plan Commitment to aid primary care workforce recruitment and retention. It is a national scheme with regional variations. Somerset GP Education Trust and Training Hub are delighted to present the NHS England and NHS Improvement (NHSE/I) New to Practice Fellowship within Somerset.

GP Fellowship

The national New to Practice Programme was included in the GP contract update as one of a number of initiatives to increase recruitment and retention. Every newly qualified GP is entitled to join their local scheme of education and support for two years and we are delighted that in Somerset the majority have done so. Since we started in April 2021, we have had 72 fellows join and our next cohort will be in March 2024.To find our more, please see this flyer and a course programme.

GPN Fellowship - Current situation

New to Practice GPN Fellowship Programme: Due to a change in the management and delivery of the New to Practice GPN Programme and the need to recruit additional staff to work for the Training Hub, the next programme will not start until October 2023. We apologise to those of you that have already registered an interest and who are expecting to start in April 2023. You will automatically be invited to enrol in the October programme. Further information and application forms will be sent out to all practices in September.

GPN Fellows on the current programme will be contacted during April and May and offered ongoing support in the interim while the new programme is being developed.

For any enquiries or advice and support relating to the Fellowship, please email  somersetlmc.sth.office@nhs.net.

GPN Fellowship

This two year programme is for newly qualified and new to general practice nurses. It is designed to incorporate training covering not just the clinical skills required and specific to general practice but also wider topics affecting general practice. The course aims to cover topics covering a wide spectrum of subjects from clinical to leadership and education to prepare and support new staff in their roles. Through this programme participants will have the opportunity to build relationships with others, share experiences and have the support of experienced mentors to facilitate the transition into general practice.

The programme will also offer regular meetings with the course lead, support from experienced nurses and peer support. There is also the opportunity to access 6 sessions with a coach to explore opportunities and support nurses in their career.

Somerset training Hub is also keen to support “new to general practice” nurses. We recognise that general practice is a unique workplace and that it can sometimes be stressful and isolating, especially if working within a small team. We are therefore offering access to some of the training opportunities of the fellowship course to “new to general practice” nurses. Although this will not be funded, as with the HEE fellowship course, it will offer training and support at no cost to the nurse/practice. We are also keen to welcome nursing associates and associate practitioners. Information for Practices and PCNs can be found here.
