LMC Medical Director Role: We are seeking an additional part-time Medical Director/LMC Medical Secretary as soon as possible to join our team based in Taunton. Ideally for 20 hours over an average of two to three days a week but this could be adjusted for the right candidate. The days worked may vary in accordance with meeting schedules and other commitments. A flexible approach to the working week will therefore be necessary.

This is an interesting and challenging role: you will need to be a registered Medical Practitioner with at least 10 years’ experience in General Practice and to have a working knowledge of the regulatory landscape of primary care including the GMS contract and Statement of Financial Entitlements. It would be helpful to have some familiarity with NHS management structures.

The role is wide ranging and includes guiding the LMC in regulatory, legal, complaints and other contractual matters and representing the Committee and wider general practice to NHS and other organisations. The Medical Director also acts as a source of advice on a wide range of issues to GPs seeking personal and professional help, including pastoral matters.

We offer a competitive salary plus 14% top up giving you freedom to choose your own pension arrangements.

You can download the Person Specification and Job Description from our website . If you would like to know more please contact Mrs Jill Hellens at jill.hellens@nhs.net . Closing date Friday 24th June and interviews early July.

Somerset LMC Roadshow on the PCN DES Enhanced Access Wednesday 29th June at 19.00, Holiday Inn, Taunton: In response to the national announcement of the Enhanced Access requirement in the 2022-23 PCN DES the GP Provider Board has asked Somerset Primary Healthcare to explore practices’ views and the options for implementing this.  The LMC view is that for almost all practices it will be better to continue with the DES, but questions remain about whether that is best done within your PCN or as part of a larger countywide structure.  This event aims to explain the options and answer your questions, taking into account the imminent emergence of the Integrated Care Board and the recent Fuller Report “Next steps for Integrating primary care”.

Somerset Library Community Hypertension & Atrial Fibrillation (AF) Screening: Somerset County Council have distributed more than two hundred blood pressure monitors with irregular rhythm detection for loan from libraries to improve on case finding. Any library member borrowing the monitors will be asked to undertake a series of home blood pressure readings which they will record on a standardised form. Further information and a plan regarding the results is attached in the patient information leaflets.

GP Training Needs Reform: The Status Quo Isn't Working for Anyone: A recent BMA survey has shown a shocking level of unacceptable behaviour towards trainees. Read more in this blog by Euan Strachan-Orr, chair of the BMA’s GP Trainees Committee.

CQC Searches: The CQC has developed a suite of clinical searches which are now routinely used when carrying out inspections of GP practices.  Partnering with Ardens and with support from SystmOne, EMIS Web and Vision, these searches will be made available to practices from 31st May. Jill
