AHPs Interpreting Blood Results: The LMC and Somerset Training Hub are aware that with increasing pressures on primary care allied health professionals (AHPs) are being asked to take on tasks traditionally carried out by GPs, such as interpreting/filing blood results. Please be aware that the registering bodies for AHPs have clear guidance that, when working outside of the expected scope of practice, a practitioner should be proficient and able to work lawfully, safely, and effectively. To meet these requirements for any new skill, thorough training, supervision and governance are essential and we’d like to remind practices that responsibility for unsafe working practices and adverse patient outcomes lies primarily with the supervising clinician, most commonly a GP.
As far as we are aware there is no specific guidance or training for AHPs on interpreting/filing blood results. AHP competencies and capabilities can be found under the Advanced Practice guidelines and roadmaps set out by Health Education England. Specific competencies including "blood monitoring for medication purposes" fall under Advanced Practice and therefore, as a minimum, if staff are asked to undertake such task only Masters qualified or equivalently accredited Advanced Practitioners do so. The practice must fully risk assess the process to protect patients and staff.
From time-to-time Somerset Training Hub is requested to provide training for AHPs on interpreting blood tests, but for the foregoing reasons we do not provide this.
Prostap: As you will be aware Takeda offer Somerset practices a discount of 30% through Clarity Healthcare currently, you may have already received a letter from Takeda informing you the supplier will be changing to Alliance Healthcare from the 1st July 2022. They will continue to offer the same discount of 30%. If practices need any further information please contact John Page at Takeda Jon.Page@takeda.com Mobile Number +44(0)7825 181571.
Somerset LMC Roadshow on the PCN DES Enhanced Access Wednesday 29th June at 19.00, Holiday Inn, Taunton: In response to the national announcement of the Enhanced Access requirement in the 2022-23 PCN DES the GP Provider Board has asked Somerset Primary Healthcare to explore practices’ views and the options for implementing this. The LMC view is that for almost all practices it will be better to continue with the DES, but questions remain about whether that is best done within your PCN or as part of a larger countywide structure. This event aims to explain the options and answer your questions, taking into account the imminent emergence of the Integrated Care Board and the recent Fuller Report “Next steps for Integrating primary care”. Supper will be available at 19.00 with the meeting starting at 19.30. Book your place here.
IGPM Webinar: Institute of General Practice Management (IGPM) are hosting a 1hour webinar on 21st June at 12.30pm via Zoom to explain the process and the benefits of professional accreditation. If you are interested please register with this link.
The Claire Wand Fund: This is a charitable fund that makes grants to GPs to provide scholarships and grants for research and education. Examples of awarded grants include: Research projects initiated by GPs, audit, course fees where the course will lead to the development of new clinical services within the applicants practice, and travel for the study of general practise in different cultures. The fund welcomes applications twice a year, at least three weeks prior to the April and October trustee meetings. Rebuild General Practice Parliamentary Drop-In Event: The event is taking place on the 15th June from 10:15am-12:00pm and will provide an opportunity for MPs to come and meet a small number of GP representatives. Dr Rachel Ward, Dr Kieran Sharrock, Dr Rob Barnett and Dr Katie Bramall-Stainer will speak to MPs who attend to explain the crisis in general practice and the potential risks to their constituents. Write to your MP and invite them to the event using this simple tool – Invite your MP (e-activist.com)
