Date sent: Friday 1 May 2015

Sent to Somerset GPs, Practice Managers and Lead Nurses

Special Edition of the LMC Newsletter

It is a sign of the times that for an unprecedented second time in a row the LMC Newsletter is being issued as a single topic “Special Edition”.  This covers two important aspects of practice sustainability, the options for working together at larger scale and what precautions you should think about taking against a practice failure.

The first of these is the core topic for discussion at the LMC Study Day on 14th May, so especially if you are planning to come to that, we do urge you to read the Newsletter – you may not agree with what we say, but we hope it will provoke a constructive discussion that will leave us all better informed and clearer about the best direction for the future.

Domestic Violence Champions Network in General Practice

We are very pleased to be able to let you know that funding from the Avon & Somerset Police & Crime Commissioner has been secured for the appointment of a GP Champions lead, employed by Knightstone  who now  provide the Somerset Integrated Domestic Abuse Service.  Natalie Giles will be working with practices to identify and train local champions who will be offered training in which they can then cascade to the practice team.  There is good evidence that raising awareness and encouraging clinicians to think about the possibility of domestic violence and ask the right kinds of question to uncover it increases the number of victims who are prepared to talk about it.  We do not know the full scale of the problem, but in the two full months since Knightstone took on the  contract 356 new referrals were made to SIDAS, so every GP will have unknown victims on his or her list.  The project will initially be rolled out in Mendip, but we hope to extend it to the whole of the county in the course of the year.

Kind Regards
