Collective Action
GPC/BMA Collective Action Summary: If you have not read this please take the time to do so. This lays out all the actions that are being proposed, which can be considered without being in breach of the GMS contract. We stress that if you are unsure of whether you can undertake any specific action please do contact the LMC for advice. As you can imagine there is a huge amount of information coming into our office about this campaign and we will keep you updated on all the relevant points while trying not to overwhelm you. If you receive any media enquiries please either direct to the LMC somersetlmc.office@nhs.net or the BMA Media Office Mediaoffice@bma.org.uk.
Clinical News/Updates
Ask About Asthma Campaign - Communications from SFT: As Somerset’s children and young people prepare to go back to school, our two clinical leads for asthma, paediatric consultant Dr Nerys Beynon and Lead paediatric respiratory Clinical Nurse Specialist Dawn Bradley are encouraging all healthcare professionals, parents, carers, schools and children themselves to #AskAboutAsthma to raise the profile of asthma, and how everyone involved in the care of children and young people with asthma can be more prepared, ensuring the right care is put in place.
For more details see here along with the posters found below. Ask About Asthma week is 9th-15th September.

New Support Group: A new Peer Support Group for Men/Trans Men who have experienced sexual assault/abuse and any time in their lives. The group will be starting soon in Bristol with other areas in Avon and Somerset to follow. View flyer here. If you have any questions please Tel: 0117 342 6999 or email: thebridge@uhbw.nhs.uk
RSV Programme - Update on the Programme to Protect Infants for GPs: There has been a small amount of confusion and a lack of information about the mobilisation of the ‘infant protection programme’ which is to be a vaccination for pregnant women.
The SW Vaccination & Screening Team have kept things quite separate as the maternal programme is to be primarily offered as part of maternity care pathway and GPs are not expected to see very many, albeit the contract includes provision for an opportunistic offer.
The team have put together a very short briefing aimed for primary care with information on the maternal programme first and the older adults programme as a reminder at the bottom.
Information for GP Partners/Salaried/Locums/Practice Managers
Cinapsis: The LMC has been contacted a few times on how practices can add locums to Cinapsis, we have attached the instructions on how locums in your practice can be added. Thank you to Dr Adenike Amosu our Sessional GP representative on the LMC committee.
GPAS: We have recently had low return rates to the General Practice Alert State (GPAS), we do understand this is probably due to annual leave. Please could we ask if you are going to be away when the return is due, please could you nominate someone to complete the return during any absence, we would be really grateful. Unfortunately we are unable to report if we receive less than a 50% return rate. The local results are fed into the national reporting for general practice across the country.
Just a Reminder - Residential Institute Codes (RI): A new process for RI codes was introduced in 2020, it has been simplified and there are only two codes which can be found here. Please note you do not need to recode your existing patients. Here's link to the PCSE patient registration process. They have produced a simple and easy to use Guide to Patient Registrations. This will keep you up to date with the current process. Configuring Residential Institute codes in EMIS Web, for EMIS system configuration. The impact of nursing home registration and how to solve the problem - Primary Care IT, for EMIS coding.
