Hi everyone - With the summer holidays upon us there is a brief pause in education activity from SGPET but it won't be long before our programme starts again.
First off we have the Diabetes Study Day (18 Sept) Once again we are running two events side by side. For those wanting a more in depth knowledge of diabetes we will be covering - post bariatric care, injectable medications, renal disease, diabetic eye disease, podiatry update and an introduction to diabetes super clinics. For colleagues who see people with diabetes but need a more general understanding HCA/Health Coach Foundation to Diabetes (18 Sept) we will be covering - diabetic foot checks, a guide to diabetes- what is it, what do we measure and why, DESMOND and Metabolic Health. These days are already being booked up quickly.
Then we have the Respiratory Study Day (23 Oct). Once again this day will be packed full of essential knowledge and updates on how to support our patients with COPD and Asthma led by our county experts.
Looking ahead further Fresh Looks returns in November (18-21 Nov) Four days packed full of updates in key clinical areas. Following a hiatus during COVID fresh looks is once again attracting large audiences so book your study leave and sign up quickly so you don't miss out!
Details of next years study days will be announced shortly.
Enjoy the summer! Ian, Tony and Anne-Marie
- Somerset Training Hub has secured a very limited number of places for specific CPD modules at the University of the West of England (UWE) for the 2024/2025 academic year. To ensure a fair allocation process, we are now inviting applications from potential candidates. Please see here for full information and here for the application form.
- Opportunity to Shape Primary Care Support and Well-being in Somerset - I'm Solomon Lebese, the Equality, Diversity, and Inclusion Fellow for the Somerset Training Hub. Having spoken with clinicians and managers I’m now looking to speak with non-clinical primary care staff to join a 10-minute virtual, conversation on experiences of people with protected characteristics in our workforce. Your insights and experiences are vital for understanding current support in primary care. These conversations will be anonymous and allow individuals to speak in a safe and secure setting. This work will help shape future offerings. Please contact us on the following email address: somersetlmc.sth.office@nhs.net Your input is invaluable, and we look forward to hearing from you. Join us and make a difference.

Have you ever wondered if over the counter nasal sprays reduce the antibiotic use? An NIHR-funded study has found that they effectively reduce the symptoms and duration of flu and colds in at-risk patients and could decrease antibiotic use. In a large-scale randomised trial with 13,799 adult patients from 332 GP practices, researchers tested two nasal sprays and an online resource promoting physical activity and stress management. Participants included those with multiple health issues, compromised immune systems, or recurrent respiratory infections. The trial groups used either Vicks First Defence gel-based spray, a saline spray, or the online resource. All groups saw a 25% reduction in severe symptoms and antibiotic use, but the nasal sprays were particularly effective, shortening illness duration by 20% and reducing work absence by 20-30%. The exercise and stress management group saw a 5% symptom reduction.
- Research Culture and Capability Questionnaire - (Dr Kate Lippiett (South West General Practice Nurse Clinical Research Fellow) is conducting this survey to help identify and characterise research capabilities within healthcare professionals working in primary care and the research culture of primary care organisations across the South West. Asking you to rate your perceptions of research capacity and its support on two levels: organisational and individual. This information will be used to support research capacity building amongst staff across the South West. They would really appreciate you taking the time to complete this - it should take no more than 10 minutes. Any queries, please do not hesitate to contact Dr Kate Lippiett kate.lippiett1@nhs.net
