Date sent: Friday 15 July 2022

Sent to all Somerset GPs and Practice Managers          This and previous updates are available here

2WW Haematology Referrals SFT only from 24th July:  From midnight on 24th July 2022 primary care will no longer be able to refer patients on the 2WW Haematology Pathway to Yeovil District Hospital (YDH) as this service will be transferring to Somerset Foundation Trust (SFT/Musgrove Park Hospital). Therefore, please note that all 2 WW Haematology referrals from across Somerset will only go through to SFT from that point.

Potential Problem Affecting Bloods Taken During a Server Switch on the 22nd June: The LMC have been notified of a potential problem affecting bloods taken during a server switch on the 22nd June. This resulted in some blood requests having to be handwritten. Some of these results have been assigned to ‘unknown consultant’ and so have not been returned to the practice via the usual route. The results should be available by opening the patient notes in EMIS, opening Tquest, viewing ‘previous test results’ and then clicking the button ‘copy to me’ underneath the results in question. This will then import the results into EMIS in the usual way. The Laboratory have sent profuse apologies and are looking into whether there is a way to identify these patients and return to practices in the usual way.

Rebuild General Practice: Practices will be aware of the campaign launched by the GPC to highlight the difficulties in GP. This toolkit is a guide for LMCs and GP surgeries to take part in the Rebuild General Practice GP myth-busting activation. The goal is to reach patients and dispel common modern myths surrounding General Practice, helping them to understand the reality of the current pressures on GPs and the General Practice system. This can be done via social media, e.g. Facebook pages, Twitter accounts, or in surgeries, e.g. on waiting room screens and posters.

NHS Contract News Brochure: Monahan’s Accountants have produced a newsletter on the new contract which practices may find useful.

Fit Notes: More detailed guidance has now been published confirming who can issue fit notes: guidance for healthcare professionals and their employers. A fit note training package is also available for all healthcare professionals, including doctors. GP IT systems are expected to be updated by the start of September. However, GPs should check with individual suppliers as they are operating on different timescales.

Letter from GP for Travel with Medication: It has been brought to our attention that some airlines are advising travellers bringing medication in their hand luggage, should bring a letter from their medical practitioner confirming the type of medication and what it is for. The BMA will raise this issue with the airline, but in the meantime, we would remind practices that patients can print off their medical record from the NHS app, or alternatively, practices are able to charge for travel-related requests for information.

Referrals to the Somerset Colleague Support Line: Could colleagues please be aware that the Colleague Support Line as advertised on the Somerset Emotional Wellbeing website Somerset Emotional Wellbeing – Somerset Emotional Wellbeing Staff Hub is a resource only for health and care workers and volunteers in Somerset. Please could you ensure that you are not referring members of the public to the Support Line as they are not eligible to access this service.

Reinvigorating GP Careers Portfolio Showcase: This is being held face to face at Taunton Racecourse on Wednesday 5th October 2022, and is free to RCGP members. Full Details.

GP Recruitment Event 7th September at Dillington House: Our latest popular GP recruitment event will be held from 4.30pm on Wednesday 7th September as a face to face meeting. This event will give GPs and GP trainees the chance to meet and talk to a wide variety of Somerset practices in one place. If you are GP or GP trainee looking for a job in Somerset please book here. Somerset practices can book their table to advertise their vacancy here. Registration and participation is free but space is limited so please book your place early.

Kind regards

Jill
