Dr Martyn Hughes Retirement As many of you know, Dr Martyn Hughes officially retires from his work with the Somerset training hub at the end of January 2022. Martyn Hughes took an interest in medical education when he was working as a GP in the midlands and was one of the first clinical tutors to incorporate the principles of adult learning into continuing professional development for GPs. He was a prominent figure in the field at the time he left to take up a partnership in Somerset.
We were fortunate that he was able to take up a one session per week post as clinical tutor in Somerset and bring his experience and ideas to our county. He completed MRCGP by assessment in order to become a TPD (Training Programme Director) and together with Dr Steve Holmes and Dr Tony Wright enabled the development of continuing education for GPs and professions allied to medicine with the crucial creation of SGPET under the umbrella of the LMC and the organisation/running of new Educational Provider Network now Somerset Training Hub being parts of an overarching group working for the good of primary care as a whole.
Somerset is leading the way nationally in this area and this is in large part is due to Martyn’s efforts. We all feel very privileged to have been able to work with him and benefit so much from his experience, personal warmth and understanding and his hard work on our behalf.
His knowledge of the system, strategic vision, passion for developing the workforce and insight into what can be achieved have significantly impacted many of us as individuals, primary care in Somerset as a whole and many others outside of the county.
Martyn, we will all miss you and wish you the very best for your new phase in life.

Symptoms of Long COVID/post-COVID-19 syndrome can be difficult to manage. To help patients and health care professionals (including health coaches) understand simple management strategies the Somerset Post Covid Assessment team have developed a website ( www.somersetlongcovid.com ). Please consider using this as a resource to signpost patients to early on in their journey of post COVID-19 syndrome. Not only do the topics included cover symptoms (sleep, pacing breathing pattern disorder) specific to COVID but also are transferrable to many other long term conditions. The pages are short so you may also want to check out the resource for as an education resource for post-COVID-19 syndrome.

C the signs and changes to the Cancer Pathways. The LMC is working closely with the CCG and C the Signs to address a number of concerns that have been bought to our attention from across the county. Some of the issues are related to C the Signs being embedded into practices, and some are related to changes to Cancer pathways such as changes to the mandatory bloods. We had a promising meeting yesterday and hope that our concerns will be addressed soon. In the interim, C the signs is also keen to hear individual feeback through training@cthesigns.co.uk

- The optional GP ES e-learning for Roadmaps is now live via the link here
- Further information on the Roadmaps to practice for physios, paramedics, OT, podiatry and dietetics can be found here
