• Message from Dr Martyn Hughes, Somerset Training Hub, STH.  At the end of November I stepped down from my work with Somerset Training Hub as I am now retiring from the NHS.

  Somerset GP Dr Jon Dolman has taken over as STH's new Director & Clinical Lead and the Training Hub is delighted that Jon is joining the team.

  The LMC and local GP educators worked with HEE to set up SGPET in 2008 and then, in 2015, the LMC and SGPET set up the Training Hub. To be involved in both these important developments, and through them support everyone working in Somerset's general practices has been a highlight of my 40+ years in the NHS.

  None of what has been achieved would have been possible without the hard work of everyone in the SGPET and STH teams and the readiness of everyone working in general practice to make the most of our help to progress their learning, develop their skills, improve their services to patients and protect their own wellbeing.

  A big thank you to all the colleagues who have made this part of my career as a GP and educator so rewarding. Good luck in these most difficult of times and, if a little early, Happy Christmas and all the best for 2022.  Please send any queries you would previously have directed to Martyn to the Training Hub office at: somersetlmc.sth.office@nhs.net

• Paediatric Pulse Oximetry Resources for primary care  Resources to support the use of four thousand pulse oximeters being sent to GP practices across England are now live. The oximeters will support GPs and primary care over the winter and aide the assessment of children with respiratory conditions Source: Health Education England

• Lead nurses/Senior nurses in general practice resilience and support    -   Dear ANP and Lead nurses,  We have all been through a difficult few years and this winter doesn’t appear to be looking any better. We are all facing greater patient demand, long waiting lists for secondary care and frustrated patients. This all takes its toll on a weary and depleted workforce. For ANPs there is the additional pressures due to the changes to ACP and what this means for us. As nurses in general practice we usually work pretty much in isolation. We may have support from our colleagues but often do not have the opportunity to discuss issues, share ideas and obtain support from others in similar positions. We often do not have time to look after ourselves. This has an impact not only on our own health but also on the rest of the team. We need to look at how can build resilience and reduce our stress and build supportive relationships.

  In recognition of this and in an effort to support us funding has been made available to enable the Training Hub/LMC to set up small local groups. Backfill will be provided to the practice to enable you to attend or if attending in your own time this funding can be used to pay for your time. We are hoping to have this up and running in early spring.
