- MDI Information - Planetary and human health are intrinsically linked. The health service is committed to be carbon net zero by 2040. While we all know this is necessary, what small steps can each of us take to help this happen? Medicines account for 25% of greenhouse emissions from the NHS, 3% of this is due to inhalers. A ventolin evohaler has the same carbon footprint as driving a petrol family car from London to Sheffield, whereas a DPI equivalent emits the same as a 4 mile journey. Terry Kemple (sustainability lead for the RCGPs) recently said “The lowest hanging fruit, as we speak, is [ending the use of] the metered dose inhaler”. In Somerset we have already done amazingly well reducing our reliance on MDIs but there is still a little way to go. Dr Jon Dolman, HEE GP Fellow at Somerset Training Hub
