Good news on Nursing Associates & Flu Jabs: Nursing Associates are not permitted to operate under Patient Group Directions (PGDs) by the Human Medicines Regulations 2012 but the National Protocol for influenza vaccination is not a PGD so the legislation does not apply. The protocol was established under a section of the legislation inserted by The Human Medicines (Coronavirus & Influenza) (Amendment) Regs 2020. The protocol authorised by the Secretary of State includes Nursing Associates.
There's Nowt Sequirus, Folks: The LMC was sorry when some practices had to postpone booked flu clinics and contact patients because of delays in delivery of the popular Sequirus vaccine. One reason given for the delay is a shortage of lorry drivers in Spain where the vaccine is made. We were therefore at this week’s Somerset oversight meeting we were gratified that the CCG’s Shaun Green asked NHSEI to look into compensating practices for extra expenses incurred by circumstances beyond their control. He also mentioned that, at a time when relationships are strained, delaying a flu clinic will not help.
Non SHS primary care representative: Practices will be aware that Symphony Healthcare Services (SHS) was developed as a collaboration between Yeovil District Hospital NHS Foundation Trust and local General Practice as part of the Symphony Vanguard Programme during 2016. SHS has appointed a non-SHS primary care representative as Director for Wider General Practice to sit on the SHS Board. Dr Ian Wyer, GP at Milborne Port Surgery and previous Vanguard Board member, currently holds this role and is interested to hear if you have any feedback, questions or suggestions regarding SHS. Please email ian.wyer@nhs.net
NHS online resilience masterclass for military veterans, reserves and families, including people living with PTSD from Somerset Recovery College launches Wednesday 29 September: Please spread the word to anyone who could benefit: patients, colleagues, family and friends. Designed and led by Bernard Genge former Royal Navy medic, trainer, coach and published author, the masterclass will help people to: take control of excessive worrying; become more decisive and confident; think about reactions and responses; respond more effectively to challenges; learn how to use practical techniques and adjust to life outside the military. All this in a safe, supportive space, with an opportunity to connect with people with similar experiences. The course will run 17 fortnightly 1.5 hours sessions. Former service people and their families will be in separate groups. All those who sign up should try to attend the first session for self-assessment of baseline resilience but thereafter people can opt in and out of sessions if they wish.
To book a place on the resilience masterclass: https://somersetrecoverycollege.co.uk/login/ or admin team on 07342 063 735. For full course outline and queries email: bernard.genge@gmail.com
