Date sent: Friday 24 April 2015

All Somerset GPs Practice Managers and Lead nurses

New out of hours service from July 2015 We have been advised that many of you may have missed this article from the 2nd April update due to the Easter holidays, please find the detail in full here

GP Survey request: Written reflection.. Is it valuable or is it a game? Dr Pamela Curtis, a GP Research Fellow at the University of Bath is looking at  whether a GP's approach to studying makes the doctor  more or less likely to feel they benefit from written reflection. She would also like to know whether you think that any of the alternatives are preferable to the written reflection system used in NHS appraisal.  Completing the questionnaire takes around 10 minutes and the results are anonymous.

For further information, please see the participant information sheet, available at http://gppro.co.uk/research/survey information.doc

EHIC Scheme The FAQ for the EHIC scheme for secondary care that was introduced in October 2014, is now updated for the position regarding charging for primary care. please find full guidance here

Random Case Analysis as recommended for the Quality Information activity[QIA] section by the BMA in their guidance for Locums A lot of locums choose to do this analysis as part of their appraisal and we have been made aware that they sometimes find it difficult to obtain the information from practices, as understandably some practices are cautious to release patient information.  If a practice is asked for the outcome of referrals from a Locum it is perfectly acceptable to supply the information requested providing you have checked their request is genuine, their  identity and no patient identifiable information is included in the information shared.

SAT is closing down the Deanery sponsored toolkit - SAT - is closing down after 1.4.16. NHS England have stated that Area Teams should not be funding any toolkits for GPs, and the Deanery have not been able to identify or set up a payment structure for individual GPs - hence the closure. In this Area Team we have been able to negotiate a “stay of execution” until next April to ensure all (or nearly all) GPs using SAT will have been revalidated before the shut down. full letter here.  You can use the revalidation toolkit on the LMC website in a similar way.

Funding opportunity for apprentices- Continuing on from last year, Health Education South West have kindly offered  additional funding for taking on an apprentice or a member of staff registering on an apprenticeship programme as of 1 April 2015.  £575 if the apprentice is aged up to 23, £1000 for apprentices aged over 24 and £3000 for those who take up a higher apprenticeship, this is on top of the Age Grant of £1500 from the Government.

Please contact Ian Weller from the National Skills Academy for Health if you have taken on or wish to take on an apprentice and wish to apply for this funding. ian.weller@nsahealth.org.uk or 07876230923

Getty Images we have been contacted by a practice that were pursued for a sum of £390.00 for using an image subject to license on their website, this really serves as a reminder never to upload any images which may require a licence.  If you do download an image from a free image website please check the usage restrictions and print off and file any documentation before using it.

The web is still probably the best for free images.  http://www.freeimages.com/ is a good resource for free images.    Just make sure you download from the free images section (not the iStockphoto section) and that it says ‘Standard restrictions apply’ and have a quick look at the image license in the link.  Create an account to download the full size image. Once downloaded print off the details sheet. There’s also lots of free icon sites, just Google ‘free icons’ and once you've found a site and icon follow the procedure as above.  As website are archived it’s a good idea to keep the image details sheet forever.

Kind Regards

Jill
