Update from SGPET Vice Chair Dr Ian Boyland
Adapting Our Programme - With COVID ever present and possibly on the rise we have had to put in place firm plans for the rest of the year. Unfortunately we are not planning any face to face education until after March due to the current regulations on face to face education from Health Education England. I think we all miss the interaction of face to face meetings and study days. They're as much about keeping in touch with colleagues from across the county and the chats over coffee as they are about the education. There is always a great atmosphere at study days and evening meetings, which I think we all accept is impossible to replicate over Zoom. I think we are all getting used to Zoom meetings, and from a facilitators point of view it is certainly becoming easier with experience to run educational events over Zoom. We've also taken on feedback from the events we have run and tweaked what we have been doing. It would be appreciated if delegates could keep their cameras on as much as possible. From a speakers and facilitators point of view it is very hard to gauge how a presentation is going when you see nothing but black boxes!
Zoom does have advantages; we aren't as limited by numbers (largest event so far has been 83) and not travelling can help people attend if time is tight. This has led to one of the first changes to our program for the autumn.
Any evening education meeting is open to all to attend, not just those in that area so someone in Yeovil can book into a Taunton event. This means there are more education events available to attend. It may be some aspects are more relevant to one area, but a lot of the updates are universal. However we recognise that the small group discussions are still important so these will continue as before. We also recognise that some groups have needs that may not be served by general group discussion, so the first five, locum and AHP groups will continue, but members of these groups are of course more than welcome to attend the general events too. Please check the SGPET website ( https://www.somersetgpeducationtrust.co.uk/ ) for updates to meetings.
It is with sadness that Fresh Looks will also be a virtual event, however the program will be as interesting and engaging as ever. Likewise the diabetes and respiratory study days will also be virtual. In the future we hope to combine face to face and remote learning at events to allow improved access and greater attendance.
SGPET also continues to increase its anytime online learning resources which you can use for learning and reference as the opportunity and need arises. These are now in a new section on the website and will be increasing in number and scope. The SGPET weekly update will continue to keep you informed and updated about our activities and other educational and development opportunities you might be interested in.
