Somerset LMC Weekly Update Friday 2 August 2019

Date sent: Friday 2 August 2019

Sent to all Somerset GPs and Practice Managers          This and previous updates are available here

Home Treatment Team referrals: The service have asked that practices share some information on patents as follows:

Ideally, GPs contact the appropriate home treatment team by phone – who will ensure that the necessary information is collated in order to make clinical decisions However – this may not always be convenient for GPs and sometimes our home treatment teams are unable to immediately respond to a call (this would happen if a large number of home visits were underway).
In these instances, we would ask that GPs either complete a referral form, or write a letter that includes the following minimum information: updated contact details, presenting problems with brief outline of social situation, type of risk and immediacy of response required, alcohol and drug history , with a printout of past medical history and current/past medication

Firearms: The Home Office has published a consultation on draft guidelines for police issuing firearms licences, which will ensure officers are consistently checking applicants’ medical fitness to hold a licence, and have signed an agreement with the BMA to provide greater protection for GPs who choose to place a firearms flag on the medical record.
The draft guidelines clarify that GPs will be allowed to refuse to provide information for patients applying for licences, and that GPs will be allowed to charge a fee for providing medical information if they so wish. Police officers - and not GPs - will be legally liable for judging whether someone is able to possess a firearm, and for checking medical records of applicants.

Somerset Concierge Service: We have been working with SPH to develop a concierge service for New GPs coming to the county and as a resource for GP retainers and Retiring GPs full detail here

Office Staff Changes: We are delighted to welcome our new office staff, Mandy Mason has been appointed as deputy Executive Director and Jo Bojarska as the Training and education Administrator. Many of you will already know Mandy as she has worked in Primary care in Somerset for a considerable time and has worked on the LMC resilience team since its conception, a brief biog of her career can be found here. Jo has worked with the LMC as an apprentice shared with Crown Medical Centre for the past 18 months and has a great knowledge of working in a busy practice, a brief bio of her career can be found here.

New website for general practice nurses: Community nursing charity the Queen’s Nursing Institute (QNI) has launched a website for general practice nurses, which is describes as an online repository of educational and clinical resources. You can find it at www.gpnen.org.uk.

RCN extended indemnity: The RCN has now extended its indemnity scheme to cover paid-for travel vaccination. Further detail here.

Emerade 500 microgram and 300 microgram adrenaline auto-injector devices supply issue: The Department of Health and Social Care (DHSC) has been notified of a supply issue with Emerade 500 microgram and 300 microgram adrenaline auto-injector (AAI) devices. Bausch & Lomb UK, the sole suppliers of Emerade 500 microgram and 300 microgram adrenaline auto-injector devices are experiencing a short-term disruption in supply of these products and as a result, are out of stock of Emerade 500 microgram AAIs, resupply expected on the 28th of August and are anticipating to have a gap in supply from early- mid August until end of September 2019 for the 300microgram devices.
To ensure that all those affected by this situation are aware and provided with information and guidance during this time, the DHSC has issued guidance with input from NHS England, the British Society for Allergy & Clinical Immunology (BSACI), the MHRA and National patient groups via the MHRA’s Central Alerting System (CAS) today. The CAS provides guidance to HCPs on the supply issue and on switching patients to alternative adrenaline auto-injector pens. The published CAS alert can be found here.
DHSC has confirmed that there should be sufficient quantities of stock from alternate AAI suppliers to support the whole UK market during this period. DHSC continues to closely monitor the supply position for all adrenaline auto-injectors to ensure the situation is resolved as quickly as possible and to ensure that patients can continue to receive the treatment that they need.
