GPs in Cheshire are scheduled to meet the new MP for Crewe and Nantwich, Edward Timpson, in late September. Chris Mole MP (Labour, Ipswich) participated in a Q&A session at a BMA Day in Ipswich in August. Local GPs were able to raise a number of issues with Mr Mole. The Parliamentary Unit sent a parliamentary newsletter to all MPs and selected Peers ahead of the party conference season which starts in mid-September. The newsletter includes an article on BMA concerns about GP-led health centres. In advance of the political party conferences, the BMA's Parliamentary Unit has placed articles in two separate parliamentary publications (Parliamentary Monitor and The House magazine) to raise MPs' awareness about the BMA's concerns on GP-led health centres and the increasing role of commercial companies in delivering primary care. These publications will be made available to all MPs and delegates attending the party conferences. Members of the London Regional Council are meeting members of the London Assembly in late September to discuss Lord Darzi's Healthcare for London proposals. Dr. Hamish Meldrum, Chair of BMA Council, will give evidence to the Health Select Committee as part of its ongoing inquiry into Lord Darzi's NHS Next Stage Review. The Parliamentary Unit is encouraging LMCs who have a Health Select Committee member as their constituency MP to lobby their MP on a wide range of issues, including GP-led health centres. Several LMCs have already arranged to meet their MP. It was hoped that, by inviting MSPs into local GP surgeries to showcase primary care, MSPs would be able to see past the negative headlines in the media and recognise the value of general practice. In April, during the SLMC conference, delegates were invited to attend a presentation which offered advice on how they could engage with local MSPs. In June, the Public Affairs Department wrote to all 129 MSPs inviting them to visit a GP practice in their local constituency during the summer recess. Timing was important as MSPs traditionally seek to raise their constituency profile during the two month break. 63 of the 129 MSPs replied to our invitation. 55 requested that we arrange a visit to a GP practice and 8 contacted us to decline the invitation. Some MSPs wanted to visit more than one practice in their area so in total 58 visits were requested. LMCs were essential in helping us to identify practices that were willing to host a visit and many were enthusiastic about taking part. To support practices, the public affairs department produced a briefing paper which explained how to get the most out of an MSP visit and provided background information on the visiting MSP. Breakdown of MSPs taking part in visits In total, 55 MSPs requested visits to GP practices in all areas of Scotland. Every LMC area, with the exception of Orkney, has hosted at least one visit. We will also highlight this in a newsletter for MSPs that we hope to publish in early September. Parliament The Public Affairs Department will write to all MSPs seeking feedback on the visit. This will help us to identify any individuals who could champion general practice in the parliament. We will seek support to lodge a motion for a members debate on valuing general practice, and if successful, we will lobby all MSPs who took part in the visit to sign up to this motion and take part in the debate. Local We will write to the Practices who took part in visits to encourage them to maintain the new relationships with the MSPs and will work with LMCs locally to help develop more links if required.
