GPs appeared in a staggering 307 broadcasts. In a landmark judgment, the BMA won its case against the governments action in reneging on its decision on how GPs pensions would be calculated from the years 2004 - 06. The BMA called on the government to now pay GPs the pensions they have worked and paid for. When the NAO report on the new GMS was published, GPC members defended the work that GPs do in the face of press stories about less work for more pay. The BMAs GP poll of opinion showed that 98 out of every 100 GPs believed that the governments method of negotiation was unacceptable. A GP interview has been set up with the Belfast Telegraph to be published early in April. It will focus on "The whole new world of modern General Practice" - a journalist is spending the day with Dr Colin Hegan's practice in Glengormley, Belfast. The Press Office also offered advice on draft letters and LMC news releases. This resulted in local publicity for local doctors and focussed the debate forward (almost daily) on letters pages of the national press. (Regular monthly article by Dr John Garner) Comment/quotes/statements given on the following subject areas: Prescribing Valium Alcohol misuse Organ Donation Sick Notes GP Extended Hours GP pay/Contract Sunbed Regulation Parliamentary From BMA Parliamentary Unit, London : GPC political activities Meetings Dr. Richard Vautrey met Jon Trickett MP (Secretary of the Parliamentary Labour Party's Health Committee) on Wednesday 12th March to discuss the future of general practice. Dr. Vautrey is also scheduled to meet John Grogan MP, who chairs the PLP Health Committee, later on this month to discuss a range of primary care issues. Lobbying MPs on extended hours and the future of general practice To date, more than 300 GPs have used an online system, which enables them to write to their MP through the BMA website. The Parliamentary Unit continues to encourage grassroots doctors to contact their MPs about the future of general practice. Public Accounts Committee inquiry on the GP contract The Parliamentary Unit is liasing with GPC to produce a briefing paper for the Public Accounts Committee ahead of its inquiry on the GP contract on Wednesday 26th March 2008. The Committee will hear evidence from David Nicholson, Chief Executive of the NHS. A number of GPC reps and local GPs have lobbied MPs on the Committee and the briefing paper will reinforce our position on the value of the GP contract. Criminal Justice and Immigration Bill The Criminal Justice and Immigration Bill contains proposals to make it an offence to cause nuisance behaviour on NHS hospital premises. The Bill is currently in Committee in House of the Lords and the BMA has been seeking an amendment so that the proposals extend to other premises where medical treatment is provided to the public by NHS staff members (e.g. GP surgeries). There was debate on the BMA's amendment during the Committee Stage this week. There was prominent mention of the BMA during the debate, although the Minister still did not accept that it was necessary to extend the provisions to settings outside of hospitals. The issue may be debated again at Lords Report Stage, which could be after Easter. 17 March 2008 PAGE PAGE 21 Appendix 3 ',-.efstT U b * + m
