(Dean Marshall) Political Party Press Releases: 28 May: Scottish Liberal Democrats SNP GOVERNMENT FAILING TO SIT DOWN WITH DOCTORS FINNIE Commenting on the protest held by medical students and junior doctors in Glasgow over the scrapping of the accommodation allowance for newly-qualified doctors, Liberal Democrat Shadow Health Secretary Ross Finnie MSP said: This is an example of the SNP Government failing to look beyond the generality of junior doctors, instead of looking at the plight of many individual junior doctors. The accommodation allowance may be a UK-wide scheme, but there is scope for a Scottish solution to address the very real difficulties experienced by some junior doctors. This is part of the SNP Governments wider failure to sit down with medical professionals and organisations to discuss the best solution for Scottish doctors, not just blindly following the UK Governments lead. Ends. 2 July: Scottish Conservatives Audit Scotland review into GP contract Commenting after Audit Scotland published its report on the new GP contract, Mary Scanlon MSP, Shadow Cabinet Secretary for Health & Wellbeing, said: There are some cost issues to carefully examine, but family doctors across Scotland have risen to the challenge of delivering more health care nearer patients homes resulting in better monitoring and better information on long term conditions such as asthma and diabetes as well as delivering the successful outcomes of lowering blood pressure and cholesterol for many patients across Scotland. For end of life care, there is no doubt that the presence of the familiar family doctor and care at or near home is what people prefer, and again GPs have fulfilled this role. Given that 12 out of 14 health boards confirm that the new contract has made it easier to develop services tailored to the needs of the local population - this is a firm vote of confidence in primary care which accounts for 90 per cent of patient contact with the NHS. In future, there is undoubtedly scope for more specialist care delivered in GP practices utilising the skills of nurses and Allied Health Professionals as well as GP's. Given the trust and familiarity between patient and GP, this relationship could be used to assist and support the tackling of the alcohol problem n Scotland. There is also a need for greater teamwork between GPs and primary care with NHS24, the Scottish Ambulance Service and Accident and Emergency units, to ensure that the NHS is truly patient focussed and patient led. Ends 2 July: Scottish Liberal Democrats NEW GP CONTRACT SOUND BASIS FOR FUTURE - FINNIE Liberal Democrat Shadow Health Secretary Ross Finnie MSP has welcomed the publication of the Audit Scotland report on new GP contracts, stating that the new contract is a sound basis for developing further general medical services in the community. Mr Finnie has also welcomed the report's highlighting of the pivotal role NHS GPs play in the delivery of local healthcare. Commenting, Mr Finnie said: "I welcome this report and support its principal recommendations which conclude that the New General Medical Services contract is a sound basis for developing further general medical services. Liberal Democrats look to the Government to ensure that more patient benefits are secured from the contract sooner rather than later. I strongly believe that there should be no more tampering with the basic provisions of the contract such as with extended hours. Liberal Democrats have consistently maintained that the Government should be negotiating with the health professionals on the provision of 24 hour care along the lines of the out-of-hours cooperative model referred to in this Audit Scotland report." Ends 8 July: Scottish Liberal Democrats GOVERNMENT MUST PRIORITISE PATIENTS OVER DOGMA SAY LIB DEMS Commenting on Nicola Sturgeon's speech to the BMA conference in Edinburgh, Liberal Democrat Public Health Spokesperson Jamie Stone MSP said: "Improving patient care must be the fundamental consideration that drives all reform of the NHS in Scotland. The SNP's dogmatic approach is very short-sighted. The role of the private sector should be considered on a case-by-case basis and subject to rigorous scrutiny. "Patients are more concerned with receiving timely care than with who the provider is. We have a publicly funded health service of which we can be proud and the Scottish Government must prioritise patients over dogma.
