We have also provided assistance for a number of LMCs by preparing press releases, advising on interviews and issuing local media lists. We have worked on the patient newsletters and posters as part of the GPCs wider communication strategy. We have been working closely with the GPC team on media strategy and key messages. Here is a summary of relevant press releases, broadcasts and BMA coverage appearing in the media since the last meeting of the GPC. (Includes media coverage up to 31/1/08) This does not include Februarys already heavy media coverage. This is on the BMA's website. As a contribution to the Parliamentary strategy, the Unit has produced an online tool, Political Wizard, for GPs and others to write to their MPs. There is a template email which we hope that members will personalise when writing. By the morning of 4 February, 100 emails were sent to MPs using this resource. The Unit has updated the opposition front bench health teams regularly. In addition, Laurence Buckman met Andrew Lansley (Shadow Health Secretary) and Mark Simmonds MP (Shadow Health Minister) on 15 January 2008 to discuss the latest developments on the GP contract. Laurence Buckman also met Norman Lamb, Liberal Democrat health spokesman, on 17 January 2008 to discuss the latest developments on the GP contract. Further meetings with MPs, particularly backebench Labour, are scheduled for week beginning 4 February. A letter from Laurence Buckman outlinging the current situation on the GP contract negotiations was sent to all MPs in England in January. Health Secretary, Alan Johnson, responded by writing a rebuttal letter to MPs, and then to GPs. A parliamentary newsletter, which featured a story on GP contract negotiations/extended hours, was sent to every MP and selected Peers at the end of January 2008. In addition Dr. Richard Vautrey wrote to an MP who was holding a parliamentary debate on GPs' use of 0844 revenue sharing telephone numbers in their practices. GPs in East Sussex briefed their MP ahead of a parliamentary debate on maternity services in their county on Wednesday 23rd January 2008 The Parliamentary Unit continues to lobby MPs on the Health and Social Care Bill's provisions on medical regulation. In addition to meeting the Department of Health civil servants, MPs have raised the BMA's concerns, posing questions to the Minister. There is absolutely no sign that the Government will move from supporting the criminal standard of proof for fitness to practise cases, and MPs from all party support the change. However, MPs have assisted us to get clarification on how the system would work, the roles of the new Adjudicator and the proposed responsible officers which each NHS organisation will be required to appoint.
